# Which Phuket Beach Is Best for What? Beaches by Area

Page URL: https://adadai.com/en/places/beaches-by-area

It depends on the month first. Phuket's west coast, from Nai Yang (5 km from the airport) down to Nai Harn (50 km), is calm from about November to April and rough from May to October, when the east-facing Panwa cape and sheltered Nai Harn are the calmer bets. Within the dry season it's simple: Kamala and Karon for small children, Surin for proper swimming, Patong if you want everything on foot, Kata to learn to surf and Nai Yang to kite.

## Key facts

- Nov–Apr — calm season on the west coast
- May–Oct — waves and red flags in the west, calm water at Panwa
- 5 km — from Nai Yang beach to the airport, the closest
- 6 km — of open beach at Bang Tao, the longest stretch

## Phuket beaches at a glance: which one for what?

Why the calendar? The west coast faces the Andaman Sea and takes the south-west monsoon head on, so between May and October most bays fly red flags. The shores that face east, Panwa and Rawai, go calm at exactly that time. From November to April it's the other way round.

After that, pick by what you want from the day. The table lines up 11 beaches from north to south, with the months each one is at its best, the one thing to watch, and the road distance to the airport (from 5 km at Nai Yang to 50 km at Nai Harn and Rawai).

| Beach | Area | Best for | Calmest | Watch out | Airport, km |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Nai Yang | north-west, national park | quiet, shade, kitesurfing | Nov–Apr | far tide; wind May–Sep | 5 |
| Bang Tao | north-west | long walks, children in dry season | Nov–Apr | rips by lagoon channels | 20 |
| Surin | west | proper swimming | Nov–Apr | steep bottom, little shade | 25 |
| Kamala | west | families, sunsets | Nov–Apr | stream mouth after rain | 30 |
| Patong | west | busy beach, all in walking distance | Nov–Apr | rip currents Jun–Sep | 35 |
| Karon | west | children Dec–Mar, long beach | Dec–Mar | strong rips in monsoon | 45 |
| Kata | south-west | learning to surf May–Sep | Nov–Apr | swim in marked zone in monsoon | 45 |
| Kata Noi | south-west | quiet, calm longer | into the monsoon | almost no shops | 45 |
| Nai Harn | south-west | sheltered bay, long season | Nov–Mar, often May, Sep | lake channel after rain | 50 |
| Panwa | south-east cape | calm in the rainy season | May–Oct | tides, rocky shallows | 40 |
| Rawai | south | boats and seafood, not swimming | May–Oct | shallow, seagrass | 50 |

## Which Phuket beach is best for children?

Dry season: Kamala, Karon or Bang Tao. Kamala's water is calm with a gentle bottom from November to April, 30 km from the airport, and the family beach club there has a children's area. Karon (3 km of straight, gently sloping sand) is calmest from December to March and easier for small children than Kata next door. At Bang Tao you wade a long way before it gets deep.

Rainy season is harder. Karon and Bang Tao take the swell along their whole length, and Bang Tao's 6 km of open coast has no sheltered corner, so families move to Nai Harn, or to Panwa, 40 km from the airport, where the water is shallow and calm from May to October but swimming depends on the tide.

## Where can you swim in the rainy season?

Nai Harn first. Headlands close the bay on both sides, so the monsoon swell arrives later and leaves earlier, roughly June to August, and in May and September you can often swim there while other beaches fly red flags. Kata Noi, tucked behind its headland, also stays calm longer than Kata.

Panwa flips the calendar: it faces east and south-east, so from May to October it's flat while Patong and Karon are rough. Rawai is the calmest shore in the south in the monsoon too, but it's shallow and full of boats, not a beach for swimming. Wherever you are, the rule is the same: red flag means no swimming.

## Which beach for proper swimming, surfing or kitesurfing?

For real swimming rather than wading, Surin. The bottom drops fast, so a metre from shore it's already deep, and from November to April the bay is calm and clear. Bring shade, though; there is little on the sand.

For surfing, Kata. From May to September its south end becomes a surf spot with shorter, more even waves than Karon's, which is why beginners learn there. Karon gets person-high waves by July, with stronger rips.

For kitesurfing, Nai Yang. From May to September a steady wind blows over the flat, shallow beach 5 km from the airport. In the dry season the same beach turns into one of the quietest on the island, with no sun loungers and trees for shade all day.

## Busy beach or quiet beach?

Patong is the busy one, and it works on foot: the town is flat and under a kilometre from the water to the last streets. From June to September rip currents are the danger there, visible as a murky strip without foam.

For quiet, go north or south. Nai Yang sits inside Sirinat National Park, so nothing is built on the sand. Kata Noi has almost no shops. Nai Harn has a lake behind the beach and no tall buildings at all.

## Where to watch the sunset from the sand?

Kamala. The bay faces due west with no headland in the way, so in the dry season the sun goes down into the sea from anywhere along the beach, 30 km from the airport. For a sunset from above rather than from the sand, the viewpoints of the south, Promthep Cape and Windmill, are a short drive from Nai Harn.

## Questions people ask

### Which Phuket beach is best for families with small children?

Kamala, Karon and Bang Tao in the dry season, when the water is calm and the bottom is gentle. In the rainy season, try sheltered Nai Harn or the calm east-facing Panwa cape.

### Which beaches in Phuket are safe to swim in the rainy season?

Nai Harn, Kata Noi and the Panwa cape stay calmer than the open west-coast bays. Anywhere on the island, a red flag means you stay out of the water.

### Where can I learn to surf in Phuket?

At the south end of Kata from May to September. The waves there are shorter and more even than at Karon, which suits beginners.

### Which Phuket beach is closest to the airport?

Nai Yang, about 5 km from the terminal. Bang Tao is about 20 km away and Surin about 25 km.

### Which Phuket beach has the best swimming?

Surin, from November to April. The seabed drops quickly, so you can actually swim a few metres from shore instead of wading.

### Is there a beach in Rawai or Chalong?

Not for swimming. Rawai's shore is shallow and full of boats, and Chalong Bay is muddy, so residents drive to Nai Harn or Kata.
