# Kamala or Kata: Which Is Better for a Family Holiday in Phuket?

Page URL: https://adadai.com/en/guide/kamala-or-kata-for-families

Pick Kata if you want everything within a short walk, and Kamala if you want a quiet village beach and don't mind driving for the rest. Both bays are calm and gently sloping from November to April, and both get waves and red flags from May to September, when Kata Noi, over the headland from Kata, stays calm the longest. Kamala is the closer of the two to the airport, about 30 km against 45 km for Kata.

## Key facts

- 15 min — on foot across Kata, from the water to the last streets
- Nov–Apr — calm, gently sloping water in both bays
- 30 km — Kamala to the airport by road
- 45 km — Kata to the airport by road

## Kamala or Kata with children: the quick comparison

Short version? Kata is the walkable one, Kamala the quiet one. In Kata the beach, food and shops fit within about 15 minutes on foot, so a family without a car manages fine. In Kamala you walk to the beach and a couple of shops, and that's about it; everything else is a drive along the coast.

The sea is a draw for half the year. From November to April both bays are calm with a gentle slope into the water, and Kamala in particular counts among the most child-friendly beaches on the west coast. From May to September both take the monsoon swell. Kata's south end turns into a surf spot and swimming is only safe in the marked corridor, while the middle of Kamala's beach gets cut into steps by the waves.

## Why families like Kamala

Kamala never quite became a resort. It is still a village, with one beach street of hotels and flats, the real village behind it, and a main street that goes quiet by ten at night. There is almost no nightlife and alcohol is sold in few places, because Kamala is a Muslim village; pork is scarce in the kitchens too.

For children the draw is Endless Summer, the family beach club between Café del Mar and the old ice factory. It opens at 09:00, runs a children's area with a sandbox until 18:00, and shows a film on the beach after sunset, around 19:00. The bay faces due west, so in the dry season the sun goes down into the sea from anywhere on the sand.

Food is simple: seafood and Thai dishes along the beach street, and a market by the village temple on Mondays and Fridays from 16:00 to 22:00, a short walk from the beach.

## Why families like Kata

Kata is small. Walk from the water to the last streets and you have crossed it, about 15 minutes, and families with children tend to settle on the flat part by the stream. Dinner? One street and its side lanes: open kitchens, cafés doing breakfast, a few European places, plus a little night market in the evening with takeaway food and fruit.

Come between November and April and the bay goes glassy; a rocky reef near the north headland shows through the shallows. Kata Noi is the other trick up Kata's sleeve. It is the next bay over the headland, has almost no shops, and stays calm longer when the rains arrive.

One gap: there is no big supermarket in the bay. Minimarts handle the daily stuff, and the weekly shop means a ride to Karon or Chalong.

## What about the rainy season?

Watch the flags. Between May and September Kata flies red on most days, and you swim only inside the marked corridor; Kata Noi holds out longer. Kamala has two spots to skip in the monsoon: the north end by the rocks, and (for a couple of days after heavy rain) the mouth of the stream at the south end, which runs muddy.

September is the wettest month in both. In Kamala, May showers are usually short and often fall in the evening.

## Getting there and getting around

Kamala is the easier airport run, about 30 km up the coast through Bang Tao and Surin with no big climbs. Kata is about 45 km, and the easier route goes inland through Chalong rather than along the coast. From Patong, Kamala is over a short, steep pass, and a weak scooter carrying two people struggles on it.

Inside Kata you can manage on foot. In Kamala you will want a car or taxi apps for anything beyond the beach.

## Kamala or Kata: which one to book?

Book Kata if you are coming without a car, want restaurants and shops at the door, or travel in the rainy season and want Kata Noi next door. Book Kamala if you want quiet evenings, a family beach club and sunsets over the sea, and you are happy to drive for supplies.

Either way, November to April is when both beaches are at their best for children.
